Barbara Brown Zikmund will keynote a special gathering to celebrate the unique heritage of churches that emerged from the Christian denomination. Congregations are invited to bring displays of their history, and share in the experience of teaching and learning more about their roots. Guest impersonators will portray famous characters in the Christian movement. Lunch will be provided.

Registration is $20 per person, or $30 per church. Childcare will be provided if requested by the deadline. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. This facility is handicapped accessible.

Thirty percent of our churches in SONKA are from the Christian tradition. We are slowly losing details of this valuable story. This event is to help us discover and preserve irreplaceable historical materials that might get lost. The spirit of the Christians is wonderful and progressive, and surprisingly refreshing. Knowing more about them will enrich and energize our churches today. The leaders of the Christian movement in the early 19th century trusted each other and valued character rather than doctrine. They loved their grass roots church and were suspicious of hierarchy. Yet, they are very ecumenical. Things that divided Christian groups were not important to them. They tolerated diversity and welcomed almost everybody. We also will explore the establishment of a Christian Preservation Society.

Barbara Brown Zikmund has taught and been a leader in theological education for the past 30 years. She has been president of Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT, president of the Association of Theological Schools, and president of the World Conference of Associations of Theological Institutions. She has also served as Professor at the Graduate School of American Studies of Doshisha University in Kyoto, Dean of the Faculty at California's Pacific School of Religion, and Director of Studies and assistant professor at Chicago Theological Seminary. Dr. Zikmund continues to teach and pursue research and writing in relationship to three institutions: as a Visiting Fellow at the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Monotheistic Religions at Doshisha University in Japan; as a Research Scholar at the Life Cycle Institute at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC; and as a Visiting /Adjunct Faculty member at Wesley Theological Seminary, also in Washington, DC.
